Join us as we discuss Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana, Jr., our October Book Club selection.

A classic firsthand account of life at sea, the book follows Dana’s experiences as a young sailor aboard a merchant vessel in the 1830s. Through his observations of shipboard life, demanding work, long voyages, and the California coast before the Gold Rush, Dana offers a vivid look at what life was really like before the mast.

Whether you've finished the book, are still reading, or simply enjoy great conversation with fellow sailors, we'd love to have you join us.

About the Book:

First published in 1840, Two Years Before the Mast is based on Dana’s own two-year voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California and back.

The book captures the realities of daily life aboard a sailing ship — from harsh weather and hard labor to camaraderie, navigation, and the rhythms of life at sea.

It remains one of the best-known firsthand accounts of 19th-century maritime life and offers plenty to discuss for sailors, history lovers, and anyone curious about life aboard a working sailing vessel.

Fall Flotilla & Crew Mixer

Tacoma Women’s Sailing Association

Join us for Members Only flotilla sail to Gig Harbor and lunch on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Join us for a TWSA member’s only sail to Gig Harbor where we will have lunch at Athony’s then sail back to Tacoma.

Meet at Foss Waterway Public Dock* at 10am

Return to Foss Waterway Public Dock* at 4pm

This is the public dock on the southwest side of Tacoma's Foss Waterway. This dock is accessible via ramps in front of the Rock the Dock Pub & Grill (535 Dock Street) and the Foss Waterway Seaport (705 Dock Street). Parking is available in the paid lot between the two buildings. Free street parking is also available.

This is a rain or shine event.

Please pack accordingly and bring water bottle and PFD.

*Depending on signs ups and available boats, you may be asked to meet your boat at Tacoma Yacht Club. Details will be provided.

Quantum Self Defense Class

Led by Alison McCaffree, Executive Director and 1st Dan Black Belt

Registration for the event: January 23, 2027 class signup

Providing basic self defense to the community is part of Quantum’s mission.

We have our unique brand of Empowerment Self Defense that inspires and keeps people safe.

In these clases, participants will:
1. Strengthen their internal personal power, confidence and sense of security
2. Understand the use of situational awareness, stance and voice in self defense
3. Understand and have the confidence to use the basic physical defensive techniques and how to use them in combination
4. Have fun, bond with fellow participants, and enjoy the somatic experience
